The U.S. Civil War Battle of Antietam took place near Sharpsburg, Maryland, on September 17, 1862. After the 12-hour battle, about 23,000 soldiers were killed, missing or wounded. The Burnside Bridge, or Lower Bridge, was fought over for three hours.
