Description
The National Museum of the Marine Corps opened on November 10, 2006, and is located in Triangle, Virginia, adjacent to the Quantico Marine Corps Base. The museum is built around a large glass-enclosed central gallery, the Leatherneck Gallery. A 210-foot spire rises from the floor of the central gallery and through the roof, at an angle that evokes the Iwo Jima Memorial or a raised artillery piece. Aircraft hang from the ceiling, and scenes of marine combat are recreated. Other galleries and exhibits surround the center gallery. Photo shows the Iron Mike statue on the grounds, with the museum in the background.
